overnors Island sits in New York Harbor right between the Battery and the Statue of Liberty. It has a long history going back to colonial days and was used in the Revolutionary War against the British. See the the Wikipedia entry for many details (). It was used first by the US Army and later by the Coast Guard.
In 2005 it was converted to park land but all the military fortifications and residences for military troops up to generals remain so it's an extraordinary collection of 18th and 19th century structures not 800 meters from the towers of lower Manhattan.
I took a few minutes before the race to walk around and the photos below show a few of the scenes before the race took place
YCRUNS has put on the Summer Loving 5K & 10K in late May for a number of years. They also put on the two races on the same course on July 4th and I have run the 5Ks on both dates numerous times. NYCRUNS has always done a great job and, as you can imagine doing this on an island with access only via the Governors Island Ferry is no small feat. Doing so during the pandemic makes the job all the harder given the COVID-19 protocols such as masks and social distancing. The number of finishes of the two races was 757, and that's a lot. So kudos to NYCRUNS, keep up the good work.

bout 10 minutes after my finish I fell down. I was walking across the grass to get my luggage and tripped and fell. I've been known to fall once in a while but I think my balance was influenced by the race. I should have sat down and rested a while before worrying about my luggage. I got myself up and the medics came and took me to the medical tent. You can see me in the title picture as I crossed the finish line a second time. They were very nice but both the EKG and blood pressure readings showed what most of the runners today must have had: elevated heart rate and elevated blood pressure. They also said I looked a little pale. This may be a result of my body reacting to the weather conditions as the above.
A premonition: during the race around the halfway point there is a place where the Statue of Liberty stands directly off shore. Since I was going so slow anyway, I decide to stop and take a photo with my iPhone. Well, the moment I stopped I could hardly stand up and I would have fallen if I didn't start moving again. So I tucked the phone back into my little pouch and got moving again. This was rather scary and showed my sense of balance was definitely affected by my running condition.
fter taking about another half hour of rest, I found my way over to the Ferry and was home by noon.
